AU MARCASSIN
Ideal for families, walkers and cyclists. Only 40 minutes from Puy du Fou and 75 minutes from Futuroscope or the seasideDescription
Ideal for families, walkers and cyclists. In the middle of the countryside, the gîte is on a hill. From the lounge window you look out over a wooded valley. At the bottom is a little stream which is the beginning of the Vendée river. In front of you is a field with fruit trees (help yourselves to the different fruits according to the season). On the left is the natural swimming pool (8m x 4m), cleaned by plants, surrounded by a terrace with chaise-longues, a hammock, parasols and tables. There is also a sanded children’s play ground. If you are energetic, you will find maps and directions for several walks. They start at 2km for an evening stroll with the dog and go up to proper hikes of 14 or 15km. Dogs are welcome and there is a kennel for them if you go out for the day. There are maps of cycle rides too, several using the nearby Green Route to avoid traffic. (the bikes in the barn are yours to borrow for free and there is secure storage for your own bikes) There are also a selection of mountain bike trails. Most of these maps are for walks starting at the gîtes but there are some which describe trails and paths in nearby areas, for a change of scenery! At the next door farm they raise rabbits and cows and my neighbour takes great pleasure in showing his animals to any interested visitors. We are 4km from L’Absie where there is a supermarket, a baker, two chemists, two banks, a newsagent and a post office. There are also 2 restaurants, 3 bars, a tea room, a doctor’s surgery, a dentist and a vet.
Small but comfortable The kitchen is very well equipped, there is even a dishwasher, a pressure cooker, a slow cooker and a wok (the three washing machines and the tumble dryer are in the barn). The bathroom has a shower, a bidet and a washbasin with the toilet leading off. The TV has an inbuilt DVD player and there is a selection of adult and children’s DVDs as well as magazines, books and puzzles. The first bedroom has a double bed, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a hairdryer. The second has two single beds, a child’s bed, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a cupboard full of games. A child’s cot can be added. Every room has a fan, and electric heating. On the private terrace is a table, chairs, parasol and barbecue.
You won’t be bored! At La Chandurière you can relax by the side of the pool, the children can play in the sand, or on the swings and slide. An evening game of boules is always popular. If it rains, you can play table tennis, darts, mini snooker or table football in the barn. Upstairs is a cupboard full of jigsaw puzzles, a table and a foldaway board. There is a ‘Cosy Corner’ but to get to it you have to limbo under a low beam! Not too far away you can find out what it was like to be at school in the last Century (Tour Nivelle). Or learn about ostriches and buy some steaks (Sèvre Autriches). If you are fit you can swing through the trees at Accrobranche. Why not try the go-karts or immerse yourself in medieval life at St Mesmin Castle with games, dances and battles? The Vendée coast is 90 minutes away with a choice of lovely beaches and the fascinating ports of La Rochelle and Rochefort. Futuroscope, a fantastic day out, is 90 minutes away. Or for a more peaceful visit, you can go to the Marais Poitevin (40 minutes) where you can hire a flat-bottomed boat. It is a region full of history. You can visit the medieval parts of several towns, old castles, magnificent churches or spend an unforgettable day (or two) at Puy de Fou, for dramatised history (40 minutes away). Deux-Sèvres is nicknamed the Festival Centre. In the summer there are festivals featuring games, jazz, art, theatre and dance. In June, Bressuire hosts the World Championships of the Highland Games and the Historic Grand Prix. There are displays of painting, sculpture and photos. Also fayres, open air cinema, competitions and concerts. When you are here, try local foods and visit the local markets – we make very tasty things!
