The French version of the MOT is entirely visual and is carried out on all the main parts of a car without taking anything apart. It is designed to ensure safety for road users and also to protect the environment. There are 133 inspection areas and 613 possible faults which are looked for.
Certain faults mean a return to the centre within 2 months to check that the faults have been repaired . A new vehicle has its first check before it has been on the road for 4 years (usually in the last 6 months of this time) after that it must be done every 2 years.
